Helpful Information about Rocky Point

  Border Crossing

Rocky Point is located in what is know as a 'free zone' and you are not required to purchase a permit for your automobile or to bring in a personal ATV or watercraft through the border crossing at Sonoyta to Rocky Point. You will need to have proof of ownership to cross the international border.

Please remember that firearms and ammunition are strictly prohibited in Mexico and a serious violation of Mexican Law. There are also restrictions on the importation of alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, electronic equipment and other non personal items. If you have any questions on what items may be legally brought into Mexico or what items maybe brought in duty free, please stop and park on the American side. You may walk across the border and ask a Mexican Customs officer before officially entering into Mexico

Importing to the U.S.

You may bring back to the United States duty free per adult, per month, one liter of alcoholic beverage and up to 5 lbs of fish or shrimp. You may also bring back up to $400 per person of other items such as jewelry, blankets, pottery, and furniture that you purchased in Mexico.

Some items such as fireworks, fruits, vegetables, uncooked meat products and poultry are prohibited.

A prescription drug for importation into the U.S. requires a current prescription from a licensed U.S. medical practitioner who is authorized to prescribe medications. You will need the prescription with you to present to U.S. Customs Agents upon their request.

When in doubt declare all items purchased in Mexico to the US Customs Agents.

Exchange Rate

The exchange rate between U.S. dollars and Mexican peso's can vary from day to day, however there is no need to change US currency to Mexican currency. U.S. dollars are universally accepted in Rocky Point.

Credit Cards

The Hotel accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Travelers Checks. Most shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards or Travelers Checks. Travelers Checks can be cashed at the Play Inn or at the bank.

ATM machines are limited in availability however; there are three new ATM machines within three blocks from the hotel.

Telephones

Telephone calls to Arizona from the Hotel can be made and there is a charge of $1.00 per minute.

Water

The water in Rocky Point is generally considered safe; however we recommend purified or bottled water for your personal consumption.

Mexican Auto Insurance:

Your American auto insurance is not acceptable in Mexico. Mexico auto insurance is strongly recommended because if you have an accident in Mexico you need proof of financial responsibility. Insurance is available at insurance agencies in Phoenix, Tucson, Ajo, and Lukeville. Mexican gasoline is sold (in liters) at Pemex stations and is fine for American cars.
